Some facts about smoking in the workplace

• Smoking kills around 106,000 people each year in the U.K. (Chief Medical Officer)

• Around 3 million people become passive smokers when they

• 72% of current smokers think that smoking should be
restricted in the workplace. (National Office for Statistics)

• In 1988 Around 50 million working days were lost to smoking

• 70% of adult smokers say they want to quit.

• 4 out of 5 smokers wish they had never started.

• Around 70% of the workforce do not smoke.

• 15% of cigarette smoke is inhaled by the smoker, 85% goes
into the environment.

• In adults, second-hand smoke increases the risk of lung
cancer by some 20-30% and the risk of coronary heart
