Groups
Quitting with others can increase your chance of success because of the commitment made to the group and the opportunity to support one another through the withdrawal period.
What to expect:
Groups run once a week for 6 weeks; each session lasts about 1 hour.
You will be asked to complete a questionnaire before joining the group
Groups are small and informal; you will not be expected to stand up and talk in front of others.
The first week is an information session, and you are not asked to stop smoking immediately. Usually everyone sets a date to stop during the second or third week.
Trained specialists will explain the products available to help in your attempt to stop smoking. We discuss how they work and the advantages and possible side effects of each to help you decide which product to choose.
All your questions will be answered.
Your carbon monoxide level will be checked; this indicates the amount of poisonous carbon monoxide gas in your body from smoking.
We will arrange for you to obtain your chosen Nicotine Replacement (NRT) or Zyban, but this may not be at the first session.
We will write to your G.P. requesting a prescription, but in some areas a voucher may be issued instead.
If you normally pay for prescriptions this charge will apply for vouchers too.
You will not be given more than 1 or 2 weeks supply at a time.
Over the following weeks you will learn to make small lifestyle changes which help you to remain smoke free.
At the end of the course we will discuss relapse prevention so that you continue to be a non smoker. You will be encouraged to keep in contact with the other group members and to see your adviser regularly at least until you complete your course of NRT.
